Ulster Society for the History of Medicine Today's Date:
Last updated: 8 July; News, Events, Officers. USHM was founded in 2001 by a group of Northern Ireland doctors interested in the history of medicine.
The aims are to promote an interest in the history of medicine especially in young people, to record history as it happens and to act as a recourse for those interested in the history of medicine.
We now have 35 members and have had a number of successful meetings including annual Prof Gary Love lectures each November.
In the past academic year we have run a very successful Student Selected Component (these were formerly known as special study modules) in the history of medicine for the medical students at Queens University. This course is run on a voluntary basis by our members and plans are in place to continue this in the 04 - 05 academic year.
We have obtained funds from the John Blair Fund to present the top two students with prizes.
The Society has been supported and encouraged by Dr John Blair, the founder of the British Association for the History of Medicine. We have also received support from Dr John Forde, Dept. of History of Medicine at Apothecaries Hall London. Apothecaries Hall have supported the appointment of Dr Robert Montgomery as the Apothecary lecturer in the History of Medicine at the faculty of Medicine, Queen's University Belfast.
The Ulster Society for the History of Medicine is an associate member of the British Association for the History of Medicine.
